Chew your food properly.

Do you know that digestion starts in your mouth and chewing your food properly is one of the most important and yet overlooked step in achieving optimum digestion?

The idea is to chew long enough so that the food is broken in little pieces to allow saliva to mix with the food to enhance digestion. If large food particles go down the GI tract and end up in the small intestine undigested properly, they alone will cause gas, bloating and possibly cramping as the bacteria has to work hard at digesting the food that should've been pre-digested already by the time it gotten there. Also, if chewing is rushed, that leads to a less than optimum absorption of nutrients and impairs satiety, and it is espressed into poor appetite control as your hormones have a hard time reading the signals your various digestive players are sending.

2. Eat real food

Eat real food as nature intended and stay away from ultraprocessed foods that are very inflamatory like snack bars, puffed grains, powdered/dried/etc foods that are laden with all sorts of chemicals to keep the comercial aspect and to prolong shelf life at the expense of your gut health. Eating nutrient dense and real food will enhance the experience and satisfaction, satiety, better digestion and absorption leading to optimum health and wellness.

Food is information that speaks to our human body in a unique language conducive to health or to illness. If food information is messed up by ultra processing, our body has a hard time reading it and absorbing the nutrients that are depleted by ultraprocessing.

3. Avoid refined sugars and minimise simple carbs consumption

Refined sugars are the number one enemy of your gut's health. The consumption of sugar in USA has been going from 2 pounds a year per person to 150 pounds a year in just several hundreed years. Wondering why human health deteriorated so badly? Scientists tell us that inflammation is the root of all health evil and the refined sugar consumption is on the frontline of pro inflammatory modern foods. Refined sugar or simple carbs consumption feeds the "bad strains" of gut's bacterial population and that leads to intestinal dysbiosis that in turn impacts all body systems function. Is it worth it?

4. Respect your digestion time

The human body is a very sophisticated machine like a computerised living creature. It is of utmost importance to allow at least 3, and optimally 4 hours between meals to allow
your digestive system to fully process your last meal. Doing
so allows other systems in the body to switch on, like cellular
detoxification and clean up.

5. Eat the rainbow

Eating a variety of living food colours on your plate feeds a variety of friendly bacteria strains in your gut that in turn boosts your immunity and supports the function of all your body systems optimising health and wellness overall.

Photo credit https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-28550-3/figures/1

Otilia Raduhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17815352961657875375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3237049207467974617.post-44777938115624617312021-05-02T03:03:00.003-07:002021-06-15T15:35:17.158-07:00Free Discovery Consults

For all your Nutritionist and Naturopathic consultations go to www.eatwelllivewell.co.uk

For a limited time only, I am offering FREE 30 minutes Discovery Consultations to all new clients.

Looking forward to meeting you.

Eat well, live well!

Otilia Raduhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17815352961657875375noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3237049207467974617.post-92023281758664232782021-04-01T17:24:00.000-07:002021-05-27T09:56:04.190-07:00Eat well and keep your mobile phone awayAn increasing number of us are coming to realize that our relationships
with our mobile phones could potentially have long term negative consequences.
I am not talking on my phone as much as my sister...
I am only checking my emails twice a day unlike my brother that is all day long on his mobile.
I am just killing time every now and then, nothing dramatic or destructive.
Does this sounds familiar?
...when I woke up this morning I had no idea what was awaiting for me at the other end of my laptop.
I've heard of a 9 part documentary series and I tried to find it on youtube.
While browsing, my attention was caught by a Melbourne University video titled: "The truth about mobile phone and wireless radiation".

How many times have you heard of those so called conspiracy theories, or mobile phone radiation causing this, causing that and down the track they prove to be unfounded claims dismantled by the scientists and the lawyers employed by the very industry that manufactures the mobile phones. So we could continue use our mobile phones and the other beautiful wireless devices without bad feelings.

They conveniently baby sit our kids, they color our world, they fill up our lives with amazing adventures and it is all at our fingertips. Can it get any better than that?

They couldn't prove anything, so we're safe. Nothing new under the sun, same old, same old, right?
Hmm, yes, but Melbourne University is one of the most prestigious universities in Australia and in the world. So I had to check this out, just to make sure. Boy, was I in for a giant-enormous surprise?

It turns out that the current radiation safety standards for our mobile phones is 19 years old (dangerously outdated, right?) and the testings considered a person that makes a phone call a week and has a huge head. How many phone calls a week do you make? How big is your toddlers head or your unborn child's head that sleeps in side your tummy, while you're having a long conversation with your girlfriend on your mobile phone, less than 30 cm away?

See for yourself, as epidemiologist and international electromagnetic expert Dr. Devra Davies PhD shares the most recent medical studies in the field, some of which she and her team have been working on.
She has a beautiful and humorous way of breaking down the science into an easy to understand language for the everyday listener.

Enjoy and talk safe.

Did you know hand sanitizers can cause your skin to absorb dramaticaly more BPA, a hormonal disruptor?

Scientists from University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri found that to be the case. See link to article down bellow.

Considering the increased rate of conditions associated with hormone imbalance and the staggering number people that use the chemical based hand sanitizers that is alarming. Hand sanitizers sales are sky rocketing in the last few years and it is expected for the industry to almost double in the next 5 years.

In animal studies, Triclosan has been found to be an endocrine disruptor and is suspected to be a carcinogen too.It has been linked too seasonal allergies in children and posible asthma. It is used in personal, cleaning products, kitchen boards and even in fabrics. Other names for Triclosan: Irgasan, Cloxifenolum, Irgasan DP300, Lexol, Cloxifenol, Ster-Zac and its cousin triclocarban.

Even FDA agrees that animal studies have shown that triclosan alters hormone regulation and poses high risk for developing antibiotic resistance and skin cancer.

Janet Woodcock, director
of the FDA's drugs division said: "Consumers may think antibacterial washes are more effective at
preventing the spread of germs, but we have no scientific evidence that
they are any better than plain soap and water," She continued saying “In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term.”

I don't know about you , but for me, my health is important.

In spite of mounting scientific evidence, Australia has not banned use of triclosan in cleaning and personal use yet. You can find it in your soaps and toothpaste and even cutting
boards and kitchen wiping cloths.

Here are some natural products that come with antibacterial benefits:

Personal care: aloe vera, witch hazel, manuka oil, tea tree oil, neem oil.

Fresh and fermented produce: garlic, onions, honey, fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C, fermented foods.

So, while our country rulers are
waiting for more information to ban triclosan to protect its people, I decided to take the matter in my own hands and make my own hand sanitizer
using simple, clean, natural ingredients.

I looked online and found this recipe that has science behind it and
will do the job of sanitizing my hands without any harsh chemicals and nasty side effects.

Have you ever heard of meat glue? Yes, you heard that correctly, meat glue.
If you eat meat and even tofu, chances are you eat this industry money saver called meat glue.

What is it meat glue? It's a product derived from pigs or cows blood plasma, an enzyme with clotting properties that makes two protein containing foods glue together. It's sold as Transglutaminase Sprinkle Powder, TG Activa KS-LS and it comes in a white powder form that can be easily sprinkled on the foods you want to glue to each other. In a vulnerable industry selling perishable foods that can get spoiled so easily, drain their profits and put them out of business faster than any other, companies believe that Meat Glue came like a gift from heaven. But maybe not.

Here you have a neat way to increase your profits by gluing cheap-small bits of meat to each other to appear like a premium-expensive looking larger cuts and sell them for double the price. It's like their dream come through, isn't it? Maybe, but for us consumers, it is a deceit and can become a living nightmare if we eat lots of it or don't cook the meat thoroughly as the restructuring process translocates surface contamination to the interior.

According to a microbiologist interviewed by an Australian TV reporter, you are at a much greater risk of contracting food poisoning when eating glued meat.

Food poisoning affects more than 4 million Australians a year and it's certainly not fun. You don't want to be one of them that's for sure.

The product can glue fish, beef, lamb, sausages. bacon, patties, cheeses and in doing that you can end up eating the pork/beef blood glue stuff in your nuggets, hot dogs, tofu, yogurt, gluten-free products, even bread, and pastries. Products containing meat glue and sold in the store must indicate on the label that it has been "reformed from a single cut" or "formed from pieces of whole muscle meat".

There is a great concern that some people may have an autoimmune reaction to the transglutaminase, the active ingredient in the meat glue. According to ANH-USA, of 288 people tested, 28% reacted to meat with glue compared with only 9% reacting to meat without glue.

While watching the program, it struck me to see, that we are meant to believe this meat glue is safe for consumption, but it is not safe to breathe in. The butcher and the TV reporter were wearing masks to protect themselves while handling the product. Why? It must carry a hazard, they needed to be protected against. What is the difference between ingesting or breathing it in? I imagine it is the amount and the concentration of it that makes all the difference but that is just my best guess.

What we can do to reduce exposure to meat glue

Decrease consumption of meat

Buy only meat on a bone

Buy from local farmers you trust

Buy organic as much as you can

Avoid eating processed foods

Cook your own food

Raise your own animals if you can

Mental diseases, Alzheimer, dementia, allergies, cancer rates are up. Turns out that our doctors don't have all the answers. Things that were inoffensive yesterday, like smoking or antibiotics we are told now, they may harm us or even cause cancer. It is time to start being proactive about our health.

We become what we eat, we like it or not. Our tomorrow's health starts today. Be informed. Be proactive. Get back to the kitchen like your life depends on it. By the time you will hear that on the news, it may be a bit too late.
Try This Instead
Craving potato chips? Struggling to resist the temptation?
This healthy alternative to supermarket potato chips could be your saviour.

Potatoes and butter, healthier? Yes, you heard that correct. Yummy!
Yes, butter is rich in fats, but eaten in moderation it is beneficial to your health. "The healthy fat guys"? Healthy fat? I don't want to be fat. Yes, I know, me too. That is why I eat healthy fats that helped me lose weight and stay healthy. over the years. You heard that right. Sounds intriguing? Yes, it is intriguing for the most of us.

We all know the relationship between saturated fats and cardiovascular disease has been a controversial topic for several decades but recent studies at Queensland Institute of Medical Research, Brisbane, found that participants with the highest intake (median intake 339 g/day) had reduced death due to Cardiovascular disease (CVD) compared with those with the lowest intake of full-fat dairy. Butter contains more than 400 different fatty acids, vitamin A, D, E ( a powerful antioxidant), B12, and K2 (cardiovascular protective properties).

If your butter is sourced from green grass-fed cows, it can contain high levels of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) that can potentially help provide protection against different diseases including some cancers and helps the body store muscle instead of fat. I could go on and on about the benefits of butter for your brain, your cardiovascular system etc. but I think you got the picture.

Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C (45% of the DV). It also contains a good amount of Potassium (crucial to heart function) and some other goodies like B1, B2, B3, B6, B9, Iron, Calcium, Copper, and Zinc. All the good stuff that your body needs.

Bottom line, potatoes can be a healthy, nutritious addition to your meals if combined with the right foods, cooked the right way and for the right people.

If you happen to have an allergy to dairy, use olive oil or coconut oil instead.

If you have a sluggish liver, add some bitter foods to your plate. Here are some bitter foods that would go well with your tornado potatose: Asparagus, broccoli, rocket salad (arugula), radicchio, endive, artichokes.

Eat them with joy, that way everyone will be happy! You, because buttery potatoes are delicious; and your liver, because bitter foods stimulate your liver to produce more bile and help emulsify the fats from your meal so the vital nutrients are better absorbed and utilized by your body. Your heart and your brain will also be happy because you are giving them the nutrients they need to function optimally.

Feeling hungry? Me too. Let's go make some buttery potatoes AKA Tornado Potatoes. Enough talk. Cooking time.
Starting your day with a glass of orange juice? There are 23-28 grams of sugar in it, so forget about desert for the rest of the day, have your coffee and sugarless tea and cook everything from scratch if you want to stay within the recommended sugar intake. Seams impossible to you? Then forget about the pulp free orange juice and have a glass of lemon water and an orange instead.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">If you ever had an urinary tract infection you know it is not fun at all. You wouldn't think twice if you should go to see your doctor or not,
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">and chances are you will be given an antibiotic for it. Nothing wrong with that isn't it?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">We all thought that till recently but apparently, the bacteria are smarter than us and they evolve and in time they build resistance to the antibiotics. T<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">he more antibiotics we use the more resistant bacteria become to them and the more Super Bugs are being discovered.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">What are the Super Bugs? Superbugs are bacteria that are resistant to the antimicrobial drugs typically used to kill them. They are estimated to cause 700,000 deaths every year in England alone. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">If no action is taken, these numbers are expected to cause more deaths than cancer by 2050.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">No wonder, the scientists around the world got united to find alternative ways to fight bacteria and they looking into using natural compounds like those found in plants and fungi to kill the bacteria once and for all and minimise the side effects of the treatment. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">As Michael Gerard from DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research puts it "natural products are poised for a renaissance to address what is a pressing health care crisis."
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Recently, scientists at Universiti Putra evaluated the antimicrobial activity of aqueous extract of garlic(Allium sativum) against multidrug resistant
clinical isolates of pathogenic bacteria found in human urine in cases of urinary tract
infection. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">What they found was nothing short of amazing.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">They tested various antibiotics <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">against UTI bacterias and 97% of the bacteria tested were resistant to them and 16% were resistant to Gentamicin. So to speak the Gentamicin treatment had the best outcome.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Then they tested garlic extract on Staphilococus Aureus from urinary tract infected people and found it as effective as Gentamicin.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">With other words, <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">Garlic extract was more effective than ampicillin, penicillin, kanamycin and cefuroxime, and as effective as gentamicin against Urinary Tract Infection.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">All this is great news but of course there is a long way to go from the Lab to the patient, from a scientific discovery to developing a new drug that is sold in your near by pharmacy, a very complicated and time consuming process to make sure it works and is safe for you.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;">While the scientists are getting busy to find alternative ways of fighting disease, should you try some garlic as soon as your UTI strikes? One thing is for sure, it won't hurt unless you are sensitive to garlic. Make sure you take it with food and smash it first to activate the beneficial compounds in it. Also, leave it on the kitchen bench after smashing it before you take it.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: small;"> You can cut it in small pieces and swallow it with a glass of water or include it in your uncooked meal. How much to take? Not more than 3 cloves of garlic a day. For how long to take it? Use common sense. It's a food, remember?

Ajoene, allicin, aliin, allixin, allyl mercaptan, allyl methyl trisulfinate, allyl methyl trisulfide, allyl propyl disulfide, diallyl disulfide, diallyl hepta sulfide, diallyl hexa sulfide, diallyl penta sulfide, diallyl sulfide, diallyl tetra sulfide, diallyl tri sulfide, dimethyl disulphide, dimethyl trisulfide, dirpopyl disulphide, methyl ajoene, methyl allyl thiosulfinate, propylene sulfide, 2-vinyl-4H-1, 3-tithiin, 3-vinyl-4H1, 2dithiin, S-allylcycteine sulfoxide, cysteine PLUS over 35 other constituents whose actions are unkown. Garlic contains 17 aminoacids and their glycosides, arginine and others. Minerals such as selenium and enzymes like allinase, myrosinase, peroxidase.

Isn't it impressive? Let's dig a little bit deeper and look at the science behind this intriguing plant.

It comes out that the sulfur compounds of garlic are responsible for both medicinal effects and pungent odour. The odour is formed by the enzyme allinase on the sulfur compound called alliin. This enzyme is inactivated by heat, so cooked garlic odour is nowhere as strong as the raw garlic odour and as such much less physiological benefits.

Aliicin, one of the most active compound does not exist in garlic unless garlic it's crushed; crushing the garlic clove activates the enzyme allinase that metabolizes alliin to allicin. Allicin is further metabolized to vinyldithiines. This breakdown occurs within hours at room temperature and within minutes during cooking. Allicin has antimicrobial effect against many bacteria, funcgi, parasites, viruses.

Ajoene is a garlic derived compound with greater chemical stability than aliicin. Several clinical studies and in vitro have demostrated anti-thromosis, anti-microbial and cholesterol lowering activities. Topic application has produced significant clinical response in patients with skin basal cell carcinoma.

Ajoene was shown to inhibit proliferation and induced apoptosis of several leukemia CD34-negative cells.

Ajoenes and dithiins are the most active compound of fresh garlic. Ajoenes have been shown to posses anti-clotting activity in the lab. It displays significant antifungal activity, inhibiting the growth of Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Paracoccidioides-Brasiliensis and Fusarium species.

Study from University of Minnesota, found that ajoene is a potent as aspirin in preventing sticky red blood platelets from clumping together. Related factors lenghten clotting times, while others actually disolve clots. All three effects can impact on heart attack and stroke prevention.

S-allycysteine and S-allymercapto-L-cysteine had the highest radical scavenging activity. Some organosulfur compounds derived from garlic, have been found to retard the growth of chemically induced tumors.

Diallyl disulfide, prevents colitis induced colorectal cancer in the lab. (Saud SM, 2016)

Studies demonstrated that diallyl trisulfide rezolved fatty liver issues and has antioxidant properties and protects against alchohol induced fatty liver and as such would be beneficial in the treatment of chronic liver disease.(Chen LY, 2016)

A 2006 study in the "Jurnal of Nutrition" found that garlic supplements can help treat Helicobacter Pylori, a bacteria that can cause gastric ulcer.
Garlic as a herbal medicine has anti inflamatory and immuno modulatory properties that have been extensively demonstrated in vitro and in vivo in animal models.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "times new roman" , "stixgeneral" , serif; font-size: 15.9991px; line-height: 21.9988px;">Allicin antimicrobial activity was demonstrated by modulation of the cytokines activating macrophages that controlled the parasitic infection.(Arreola et al., 2015)

Dr. Artturi Virtanen, a Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, proved garlic’s prolonged action against dysentery and typhus, as well as other infections caused by streptococcus and staphylococcus.

Garlic has been used as antiseptic to prevent gangrene during world war and was ingested as a stimulant by athletes during the first Olympic Games in Greece.(Shobi, 2015)

An antiseptic lotion prepared out of garlic it is used to clean wounds and ulcers in India. Garlic tea is suggested to treat fever, headache, cholera, and dysentery in China. (Shobi, 2015)

Since scientists estimate that within ten years antibiotics will become redundant according to BBC, adding garlic to your everyday meals seams to be a good idea http://www.bbc.com/news/health-30416844 . You don't like the smell, go for garlic capsules. Problem fixed.

Fighting cancer? How about eating some mushrooms? Scientists from all around the world have been intrigued by the possibility. So they went to their labs, pulled up their sleeves and put those mushrooms to test. What they found is astonishing. Specific mushrooms, see the table below, hold the power to strengthen or wake up your immune system if you want, to do its job and fight the precancerous or cancerous cells and in doing that they stopped its proliferation.
Who would have thought, something as humble as mushrooms could make a difference for someone battling cancer?
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "minion w08 regular_1167271" , "times"; font-size: 17px; text-align: justify;">Scientists have found that bio active compounds from medicinal mushrooms can activate or modulate the immune system response leading to stop cancer from growing and metastasizing.
<span class="highlight" style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "clean" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.52px;">Apparently, glyphosate<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "clean" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.52px;"> and its metabolites are widely present in the global soybean supply; It is important to note that over the years, <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , "clean" , sans-serif; font-size: 13.52px;">regulators have dramatically increased glyphosate tolerance levels in maize, oilseed (soybeans and canola), and alfalfa crops and related livestock feed.
Probiotics from yogurt may improve Depressive symptoms.

More and more research shows that the gut microbiome has a key role in the regulatory brain function and in human behavior. This concept is a "paradigm shift in neuroscience" according to Gerard Clarke PhD, from Microbiome Institute at University College Cork in Ireland.

In a placebo-controlled clinical study, subjects received a daily probiotic for 4 weeks, Bifidobacterium longum; after that, they received a placebo for another month. Scientists found reductions in the stress hormone and reduced anxiety in the participants.

The results showed reductions in the stress hormone cortisol and a blunted increase in subjective anxiety in response to acute stress. More research is needed but there is hope, some probiotics strains may improve depressive symptoms.
First things first. Did you know cucumbers are in fact considered a fruit? No? Me either. But that's ok. Your stomach doesn't mind.
Before we get into the science behind this fruit/veggie let's have some fun, watching this hilarious video that prompted me to write this blog about cucumbers. Enjoy!

With B vitamins, vitamin C, copper, vitamin K, manganese and potassium, cucumbers can help you to avoid nutrient deficiencies that are widespread among those eating a typical Aussie diet. Cucumbers contain unique polyphenols and other compounds that may help reduce your risk of chronic diseases. They contain fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. Studies have shown that fisetin improves your memory and protects your nerve cells from age-related decline and prevents progressive memory loss and learning impairments in mice with Alzheimer's disease.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Laboratory studies suggest that cucumber extract helps reduce unwanted inflammation, in part by inhibiting the activity of pro-inflammatory enzymes and, as such, they have the capacity to reduce the inflammatory response in your body.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Cucumbers contain vitamin B1, vitamin B5, and vitamin B7 known to help ease feelings of anxiety and reduce the effects of stress on your body.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Cucumbers contain polyphenols called lignans (pinoresinol, lariciresinol, and secoisolariciresinol), which may help to lower your risk of breast, uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancers.They also contain phytonutrients called cucurbitacins, which also have anti-cancer properties.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Cucumbers contain vitamin C, beta-carotene, powerful antioxidants and flavonoids such as quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, and kaempferol that confer additional benefits to your body. Kaempferol may help fight cancer and lower your risk of chronic diseases including heart disease. Quercentin has natural antihistaminic properties.

Cucumber skins contain insoluble fiber which helps food to move through your digestive tract more quickly and provide the means for a healthy elimination. Cucumbers are very low in calories, one cup of sliced cucumber contains just 16 calories and, as such, snacking on cucumbers could be a good idea if you are interested in weight control.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Cucumbers contain potassium, which is vital for your body to function properly. Potassium interacts with sodium to help control nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction and heart function and as such is associated with lower blood pressure levels.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: 0px 0px; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Flavonoids and tannins in cucumber have been found to have free-radical scavenging and pain-relieving effects. As you now, if you have issues with acid reflux, drinking water can help in raising your stomach pH and, as such, suppress your acid reflux symptoms; it is possible that water-rich cucumbers (95% water content) may have the same effect.

<div style="-webkit-hyphenate-character: "‐"; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: transparent; background: 0px 0px rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 19.2px; margin-bottom: 16px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Researchers from the University of Virginia School of Medicine have discovered a rare and powerful type of immune cell in the meninges around the brain. This suggests that the cells may play a critical role in battling neurological diseases like Multiple Sclerosis, Meningitis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease etc. Researchers believe that the cells may be the missing link connecting the microbiota in our guts and the brain.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The finding builds on previous work by the lab of Jonathan Kipnis (left) and researcher Sachin Gadani, that found an unexpected link between the brain and the immune system.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">“This all comes down to the immune system and brain interaction,” said Kipnis, chairman of UVA’s Department of Neuroscience. “The two were believed to be completely not communicating, but now we’re slowly, slowly filling in this puzzle. Not only are these cells (immune) present in the areas near the brain, they are integral to its function."
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The immune cells play important roles in the body, triggering allergic reactions and guarding against pathogens. Kipnis team has determined that they are the vital communicator between the brain's immune response and gut microbiome. This could be of great significance as our intestinal flora is essential for maintaining our health and wellbeing.
<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This comes as a confirmation to what <span style="color: #111111; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">naturopaths have been saying for decades about the gut and brain axis. What a relief. If we would have only worked together, we could have saved the pain and the sufferings of so many.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

The findings have been published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine by Gadani, of UVA’s Medical Scientist Training Program, Igor Smirnov, Ashtyn T. Smith, Christopher C. and Kipnis, the director of UVA’s Center for Brain Immunology and Glia.
Up to 60 people suffering Coeliac disease are expected to take part in a medical hookworm trial in Queensland and a New Zealand hospital this month according to Herald Sun. Researchers from the Australian Institute of Tropical health and Medicine a James Cook University in Cairns are leading the trial. The sufferers will be ingesting up to 20 parasitic worms and allowing them to multiply in their stomach may modulate the immune response of the person and hold the key to alleviating the coeliac disease debilitating symptoms.

<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #232323; font-family: "Merriweather Sans", Helvetica, "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px 32px;">
The trial has already shown to be effective in an earlier 12-person study, leaving them symptom-free after eating a bowl of pasta every day for two weeks says Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch who made the announcement of the trial on Wednesday.

<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #232323; font-family: "Merriweather Sans", Helvetica, "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px 32px;">
Lead researcher and immunologist Paul Giacomin is optimistic that the trial could mark a breakthrough research and lead to the development of a drug for patients as ingesting live worms could be a turn-off for some people.

<div style="box-sizing: inherit; color: #232323; font-family: "Merriweather Sans", Helvetica, "Open Sans", Arial, sans-serif; font-stretch: normal; line-height: 28px; margin-bottom: 24px; padding: 0px 32px;">
My question is, how are we going to control the hookworm population down there to make sure the "helpers" of today will not become our "enemies" later on?
